Life's Better on the Block

10 miles off the coast of Rhode Island in Block Island Sound lies an island of pure, idyllic and unspoiled beauty.
 It's a magical place.
Victorian hotels, lighthouses, dirt roads, and 360 degree of breath-taking views
Dotted with weathered gray homes, the island is pure magic
Since we go to the island on our boat, we bike everywhere.
This photo is from a scrapbook page I made for the kids in 2010-- the year my husband taught the boys how to pilot the little dinghy.
Block Island Sculptures are found on every beach - creating one is a very  calming experience so I guess that's why they are found on every beach.
as are beachroses...my fave, obviously!
Green driveways are the norm on the island.
Anything fancy here just looks out of place.

The best part of the evenings are the sunsets...

See you in a few weeks!

xoxo,

Millie

When Summer Sizzles

Yesterday, the temperature soared to 97 degrees here. With high humidity.  The forecast for today is 98 degrees.  It's  7 a.m. and already the thermometer is at 80 degrees.  Up here in New England we look forward to summer all year long. So when it hits us with an  oppressive heat wave like this one on the first day of summer we all complain about it.  Now I like to complain as much as the next person, but I say "Bring on the heat!" Here's a few tips to get you through the heat wave.

Wishing you a happy...

When bonfires great, with lofty flame,
In everie towne doth burne;
And young men round about with mades
Do dance in everie street
With garlands wrought of Motherwort
Or else with Vervaine sweet.

Ah,  Midsummer's Night Dream--thou doth inspire me --Bard Shakespeare!

Since today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, it is time to celebrate the long sweet days of summer ahead, the fertile harvest of Mother Earth to come, and all of our joys and blessings.

Why not start a new tradition and host your very own  Midsummer's Eve Bash this year?  What a great way to celebrate today's summer solstice in sweet Scandinavian style, and kick off a sizzling summer season of parties with some fun!  Renew this ancient holiday traditiona and make it your own annual bash.  What do you need to host a terrific Midsummer's Eve party?

Place glow balls in white stockings for a magical decor to illuminate the night

It's said that if a young girl gathers seven different types of flowers and places them under her pillow on Midsummer Eve, she will meet her soulmate in her dreams.  So make some wildflower bouquets for your single gal pals to take home!

At midnight on Midsummer's Eve, when the moon is high in the evening sky,  young girls can scatter rose petals before them saying:

Rose leaves, rose leaves, Rose leaves I strew.
He that will love me Come after me now.

The next day, Midsummer's Day, their true love will visit them.

Send your guests home with a gift to remember this magical evening.

or just put them in brown paper bags!

Then after your friends and guests leave watch the moon set from a comfy spot with the ones you love..

Wishing you each a happy summer!
